Building Schools for the Future - update 12 July 2010
Categories: School News

Do you feel strongly about the possible cancellation of Dunraven's BSF project?
Write to Michael Gove, Chuku Umunna or your local councillor! Click here for details.
| A number of families have expressed the desire to support the school by wriing to MPs and Councillors about the BSF situation. This link will take you to a suggested letter that you could adapt and/or send to your local MP and councillors. It is likely that Michael Gove, the Secretary of State for Education, and his team will begin the decision making process shortly so it would be helpful to send the letter as quickly as possible. Every contact from a family will make a difference: the MPs and councillors have been elected to represent their community and will take action when a number of people contact them about the same issue. |
Following the announcement on 5 July by the Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove, on the future of BSF, the schemes for Dunraven and Norwood (as Lambeth's 'sample' schools) are 'for discussion' which means that they could still go ahead providing our case is strong enough - and it is. All the other schemes for existing Lambeth secondary schools are to be 'stopped' with immediate effect. We will know more following a review by an independent panel and we will keep families updated.
In the meantime, please contact your local councillors and MP to make the case to support the project at Dunraven. We'll provide details of what you might say to persuade them if that would help.

Extract from the Education Funding statement in the House of Commons on 5 July:
Chuka Umunna (Streatham, Labour)
We are in the absurd position of constantly having to ask the Secretary of State to read from his list. I know precisely which schools in my area have not reached financial close, but I do not know if they have got to the close of dialogue stage. Those three schools are La Retraite, Dunraven and Bishop Thomas Grant. Can he tell me from his list whether they will go ahead?
Michael Gove (Secretary of State, Education; Surrey Heath, Conservative)
Again, I hope that hon. Members appreciate that the confusion that exists about whether schools have reached financial close, close of dialogue or another position is a consequence of the way in which the whole BSF project was designed. Their confusion is a direct result of the bureaucracy. Dunraven school is a sample school, and therefore falls within the group of local authority schools that we will look at. Elm Court, a special school in his constituency, has already opened under BSF. I believe that two other schools have not reached financial close, and I will confirm that in my letter to him. A full list of all schools is being placed in the Library-[Hon. Members: "When?"] It is in the Library now.

According to the Department for Education website on 6 August "Education Secretary, Michael Gove, today announced the go-ahead for a series of new school projects. 33 local authority ‘sample’ school projects in 14 council regions will now proceed in Barking and Dagenham, Blackpool, Camden, Derby City, Ealing, Halton, Hartlepool, Hertfordshire, Lambeth ,Oldham,Poole, Somerset, St Helens and Wandsworth. "
Read details on the DfE website here, and see the list of reprieved building projects here. This last document states: "Dunraven (Foundation Mixed) Secondary School Sample – capital allocated".
We are now waiting for the details of how the contractual process will proceed.
The school is very grateful for all the support we received from students, families, local councillors, the Lambeth BSF team, Pete Robbins, Phyllis Dunipace and from our MP, Chuka Umunna.
Primary Maths Competition
Categories: School News
.jpg)
On Thursday 1 July, teams from our local primary schools came to compete in the fifth Dunraven Primary Maths Competition. The teams really enjoyed tackling a variety of types of challenging problems in a carousel of tasks, then a relay outside and finally using our interactive Qwizdoim sets. The primary students all impressed us with their enthusiasm, capability and teamwork. Our helpers from the SAS scheme (university undergraduates working with Dunraven) were crucial in making the whole event a great success.
Emily from Sudbourne said “It was fun doing all the Maths”.“It got together children from different schools and was really fun.” said Tim from Rosendale. “It was great!” thought Hope from Penwortham
You could try 2 of their relay questions yourselves:
Nines: If you list all the numbers from 1 to 100, how many figure nines would you write?
Sequences:
Here is a sequence with missing numbers
2 __ __ __ 18
The rule is to start with 2 then add the same amount each time. What are the missing numbers?
The worthy winners were Rosendale, closely followed by Penwortham.

GCSE results
Categories: School News
Students' hard work has paid off with another set of 'best yet' results. Following the very strong A level results last week, the GCSE students have followed suit with fantastic results of their own. 82% of the year group gained at least 5A*-C grades with many outstanding individual performances including: Serian Carlyle 8A*, 5A; Nicholas Martin 5A*, 5A; Alex Thomas-Hedman 5A*, 4A; Zahra Arzoky 4A*, 7A; Max Loveday 4A*, 5A. 62% of the year group gained 5 or more A*-C grades including English and Mathematics.
Ms Knowles, Director of Learning for Year 11 was delighted: 'This is a tribute to the hard work of the students and the excellent support from their teachers and families. Some of the students have done brilliantly against the odds and I'm very, very proud of them. It's a great way to retire - at the top'.
A reminder to those students who have not yet registered with the Sixth Form to do so as soon as possible. Places are significantly oversubscribed so it is very important to register now or you risk not getting your place even if you got the right grades. Contact Mr Cuffy, Director of Sixth, as soon as possible.

A-level results 2010
Categories: School News
Congratulations to all those students who did so well in their A levels and thanks to their teachers and families for all the support provided along the way. Initial analysis suggests that these are another set of 'best yet' results - 98% pass rate, 53% at grades A*-B, 77% A*-C.
These are very impressive results and mean that almost every student has a University place for the Autumn. Destinations include: Oxford, Cambridge, Liverpool, Sheffield, King's College (London), Manchester, Warwick, Leeds amongst many others.
Bobby Leaf 2A*s, 3As; Elia Orellana 2A*, 1A; Samir Jehan, 2A*s, 1A; Rehema Figueiredo 1A*, 3As; Katy Thomas, 1A*, 2As; Chidi Amadi 4As; Lucy Davidson 3As were amongst our very best performers.
Mr Cuffy, Director of Sixth, said 'We are delighted at the outstanding results of our students. It is a tribute to their hard work and to the dedication of their teachers'.
Gas works on Leigham Court Road
Categories: School News
There will be on-going works to the Gas Main on Leigham Court Road, between Mount Nod Road and the junction of Sunnyhill Road until early October 2010. During this time there will be traffic controls and local diversions in place and some bus stops on Leigham Court Road will also be out of use. We are working closely with Lambeth Highways Department and Morrisons (the contractor for the works) to make sure that the road crossing during school hours is as safe as it can be. Where possible, we would ask parents not to use cars to drop children off at school.
Science visit to South Bank University
Categories: School News

On Thursday 24 June a group of Year 8 students went on a science visit to South Bank University. There were four tasks and we were put into pairs with students from other schools.
The first challenge was building a bridge out of paper and string. Then we had to build a motor car that would move by itself. Other tasks were making a robot and making a buoy. We each did three challenges- my favourite was building a car, followed by making a buoy. I also made a bridge.
We won the robot challenge and Katie was given a plaque. It was really interesting and we learnt all about mechanics and circuits, terminal boxes and structure. The day was generally very good and I thought that everyone was instructive and encouraging.

Dunraven runner-up at Salters' Festival
Categories: School News

On 13 May Ms Khalid took four students from 8ZG to University College London to represent Dunraven in the Salter’s and university challenges. The two challenges were introduced, supervised and judged by staff and students of the university. It seemed all of the students really enjoyed the two challenges and learned lots of new skills.
The forensic and chemistry challenges involved identifying different chemicals and practicing using different methods such as chromatography. Next there was a highly entertaining practical presentation.
At the award ceremony Dunraven came second out of 28 schools and brought home some great prizes. I thought it was great working in a laboratory and using equipment that you certainly wouldn’t find in a classroom.

Cinema visit with special guest
Categories: School News

Mr. Day and Mr. Schmauss led a group of almost 60 outstanding Dunraven students to see an advance screening of the new Karate Kid film, starring Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith (aka Will Smith's son). The visit was a reward for Year 7 students who had especially outstanding progress reports and Year 8 students with perfect attendance and/or punctuality. We arrived at the cinema, got our popcorn and sat down for the film when a special guest arrived: none other than 'the fresh prince' himself, Will Smith! He talked and Joked with the students about watching his son on the big screen and travelling to China for the filming. After the film, we had a Q and A with the director, walked to Trafalgar Square for a picnic lunch and then caught the bus home. An excellent day with outstanding students.
Research on record improvement
Categories: School News
Groundbreaking research which highlight the reasons behind how young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in Lambeth have gone on to achieve outstanding GCSE results, has been published by Lambeth Council.
The reports examine various factors behind the consistently high academic results enjoyed by pupils from four Lambeth secondary schools - La Retraite RC High School, Stockwell Park High School, Dunraven School, and St Martin-in-the-Fields High School.
The findings are published in a series of two research reports -'Outstanding Schools: A Study of Successful Practice' and 'Raising Achievement: Good Practice in Schools with Outstanding Leadership'.
The key criteria for the selection of the schools was a high proportion of pupils who are eligible for free school meals, an 'outstanding' grade in leadership in the most recent Ofsted inspections, and a high standard and sustained improvement of GCSE results over the past nine years.

Dunraven goes to China
Categories: School News

Six Dunraven students from Years 8 and 9 are travelling to Shanghai, China on Friday 9 July, returning on 18 July, where they will be taking part in the Shanghai International Youth Science and Technology Expo. They are going to meet 300 other students from 17 countries around the world. Only two UK schools are participating, and we are one of them! Students also get the opportunity to visit and explore Shanghai.
The students - Jack, Ali, Zubair, Sian, Thomas and Cheyanne - will be presenting a bio-organic wall which they have created as part of the Science and Engineering Club. You can read about the science STEM club here.
The whole project is funded by the Confucius institute and the visit will be accompanied by Ms Birbalsingh and Dr Crentsil.
The party plan to write a daily blog to report back.
The 2010 Shanghai International Youth Science and Technology Expo is part of the Shanghai World Expo. Their motto is "Better City, Better Life". Our science project is an invention which is unique, economical and sustainable and helps to create a healthy city by absorbing harmful CO2. It is a Portable Bio-Organic Wall: a wall which can capture and help to reduce CO2 emissions. We also have an interactive piece called Causation, which shows how CO2's production/reduction is affected by everyday objects or processes which we take for granted.
Dr Crentsil believes that The Dunraven School Portable Bio wall is the world's first. It also has the added effect of reducing reliance on air conditioning and this in turn further reduces the output of CO2 emissions. Sustainability is the way of the future.

Hitherfield and Julian's visit Dunraven science
Categories: School News
.jpg)
The science department was delighted to welcome two lively groups of primary school students from Hitherfield and Julian's for a science taster morning on 30 June 2010.
The students got to try their hand at a variety of science experiments ranging from launching paper planes to reacting magnesium with hydrochloric acid. All of them showed commendable enthusiasm and some showed a real aptitude for Science well beyond their tender years.
Many thanks to a very able and enthusiastic team of Year 9 students (Jessica, Ayyub, Tunde, Monehin and Adnan) who helped the morning run smoothly.
The morning finished with a (deliberate!) bang with exploding hydrogen balloons and smoke rings fired from an air-zooka.
We look forward to welcoming many of these students into Year 7.

Chuka Umunna on education in Streatham
Categories: School News

In his maiden speech in the commons, Streatham's new MP Chuka Umunna deplored the concept of "broken Britain" and the demonising of young people by the media. He praised the examination successes in Streatham, specifically at Dunraven where 70 per cent of A-level students got A to C grades, and expressed concern at the uncertaincy over the Building Schools for the Future programme,
"Although there are outstanding problems, there is a terrific sense of community in the constituency, " he said. "It is not broken in the way that some have described our country as being. "Broken" is a word which I think has been too loosely bandied about to describe our society. The word is often attached in television news reports to images of young people in inner-city areas like mine. That is reinforced by a tabloid media that at times presents young people as nothing but trouble. It is utterly deplorable to demonise our young people in this way.
"Take the latest school exam results in our borough. Across Lambeth we saw success last year. Dunraven school in the middle of the constituency has a sixth-form centre that opened in 2003 to address the lack of A-level places. Last year, 70 per cent. of its A-level students got A to C grades. Likewise, the percentage of Lambeth pupils obtaining five or more A* to C GCSE grades soared to 71 per cent., which is well above the national average. These are not the results of a broken society.
"There are planned building developments at three of the five secondary schools in my constituency that have not reached the financial close stage of development. We know that we do not see such results unless we invest in our schools. Those developments in my constituency are Building Schools for the Future projects. I hope that the Secretary of State for Education will at some point clarify the Government's intentions in that regard."

Goodbye Year 11 - for now
Categories: School News
Year 11 said goodbyes on Friday 21 May as they finished their lessons before going on study leave to sit their exams and then going their separate ways although with many planning to return to the sixth form.
At a final assembly before lunch, Mr Boyle told students that it used to be said "schooldays are the happiest days of your life". But he hoped that, while they would always treasure their memories of Dunraven, the future would be even better. They had completed eleven years of compulsory education and now they were free to make their own choices.
Ms Knowles, director of learning for Year 11, who is retiring after 29 years at Dunraven, was given a rousing reception by the students. Students were reminded that when Ms Knowles arrived at Dunraven in 1981, the younger teachers had not yet been born. Ms Knowles said she would treasure her memories of this, her best year group ever.

We had a very successful evening to celebrate achievement at Brixton Town Hall on Monday 17th May.
Students who received Jack Petchey Awards from schools in Lambeth were all present, including 6 students from Dunraven. They were awarded based on their positive contributions to the school, achievements and going out of their way to support charities. The Jack Petchey is a prestigious award given to students who consistently support others and the School community. Huge congratulations to all the students involved - Lucy and Imran in Year 8, Aslam and Robbie in Year 9, Grace and Kebralem in Year 12, and Rakhim and Chabris.
Ms Edge
Imran in Year 8 writes:
"On the evening of 17th May 2010 I went with my family, Ms Edge and Mr Boyle to the award ceremony of the Jack Petchey Foundation to collect my award. The evening was a lot of fun, with singing, dancing and some great food! I was nominated for the award by my tutor Mr Morris. He thought I deserved it because of my hard work and commitment to art club. As well as giving a small speech when I was presented with my award, I also got up on stage with other students from schools in Lambeth, and we all danced together, in front of 700 people!
"I was presented with a medal, and £200 to spend on the school. I chose to spend it on some state-of-the-art digital cameras for the art department.
"I felt really good, and am very proud of myself for this achievement. My parents who came along to the ceremony are also very proud. Thank you Mr Morris for nominating me for the Jack Petchey award."

The Jack Petchey foundation writes: "As part of the Jack Petchey Foundation’s tenth anniversary celebrations we are undertaking a survey of youth attitudes – this survey is called "Listen Up". We need your help with this...
"We want to know what the young people at Dunraven School think about a whole range of different subjects including education, work, politics, health, ambitions and hobbies.
"The survey results will be published in a Jack Petchey Foundation report, “Listen Up”, which we will use to make sure that people in positions of influence and power, understand and react to what young people REALLY have to say and think. In this election year, it is more important that young people’s voices are heard.
"How can young people give their views? All of the young people at Dunraven School that are aged between 11-25 can complete the “Listen Up” survey by clicking on the following link:

In the past the Dunraven election has closely mirrored the national result. Although this was not correct this time, it did reflect the Streatham result in Keith Hill's old seat where Chuka Umunna (Labour) won, with Chris Nicholson coming second for the Liberal Democrats.

Dunraven girls in fine football form
Categories: School News

A TEAM from Dunraven School won an all-girls’ football tournament that saw nine teams from local schools taking part (says Lambeth Life, May edition, p24).
St Matthews Community project and Lambeth’s sports and recreation service held the Secondary School Girls’ Football Festival at Ferndale sports centre in Brixton. Dunraven B and Stockwell A met in the final, with the team from Dunraven coming out on top with a 3-1 win. Dunraven’s Kate Martin was named the player of the tournament and St Martin’s in the Field won the fair play award.
Project manager Lee Dema said the tournament had been a big success and that the project is now hoping to attract more girls to play regularly. It has been running weekly sessions at the Ferndale sports centre since October 2008. Lee is hoping the tournament will be a catalyst for more girls getting involved.
He said: “The tournament went really well. We had 72 girls taking part, but it’s easier to get lots of people when the schools are involved and they are organising travel.
“We’re trying to get more girls to do it on their own and come down to the sessions on Saturdays. We have 16 girls who come down regularly and we provide coaching for all standards. Some of them are very good and others have barely kicked a ball before, but we work with them all to improve their skills and they get to play in sixaside matches as well.”
The sessions run every Saturday morning from 10am to noon and are open to girls aged 11 to 16. To book a place call Lee on 0794 410 1134.

Old men shouting in a room

Does politics matter?
Recently, I was asked to do an assembly in Lower School on politics for Social Sciences Week. In the course of the assembly, I asked the Year 7 audience to raise their hand if they thought politics was important and a few meek hands faltered in the air. After berating the Year 7s on the importance of politics, I repeated my question to somewhat more success with a great many hands now faltering in the air. However, there were still a few hands hanging limply by sides and so I asked one boy to explain to me why he didn’t think politics was important. The boy’s response was that politics wasn’t important because ‘it’s just old men shouting at each other in a room’.
For someone who didn’t believe in the importance of politics, he had just made a fundamentally important political point.
The public’s, and more precisely young people’s, disengagement with politics has been a great topic in the media in recent years. All of the major parties in British politics have proposed plans to get Britain’s youth engaged and active in politics, including lowering the voting age to 16 and the recent Youth Mayor and Youth Parliament elections that I’m sure many in the school have participated in. However, no political party has attempted to tackle the fundamental view held by the disengaged, that politics is ‘just old men shouting at each other in a room’.
Now, I am a politics fanatic, not to be confused with any other type of fanatic, and I could rant and rave about millions of what I believe to be interesting and riveting political campaigns against poverty, inequality, etc, etc. However, even I must take note of what Hillary Clinton said when fighting the US democratic Primaries against Barack Obama in 2008: ‘You campaign in poetry but you govern in prose’. Seeing as we are in Britain and, as such, I am under no pressure to be politically neutral, I can say that I am quite happy that Mrs Clinton did not win the Democratic Nomination, but I’m afraid she is right.
Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against geriatrics and shouting - or rooms for that matter - but when one truly breaks down the process of law making and politics in this country, it really does just seem to be ‘old men’ in ‘a room’. Yet it is those ‘old men’ in ‘a room’ that shape our lives in every context imaginable.
So, what is the solution?
Well, governing a country outside would be pretty impractical, and, as a recent survey by OnePoll revealed that 1 in 10 children credit the Queen with the invention of the phone (don’t worry parents, none of these children came from Dunraven), it would seem young people may not necessarily be a fit replacement for the old men just yet.
I say the solution lies with us as citizens. In my opinion, the real cause of disengagement with politics is not old men (some of them do a really good job), or shouting (no can say they don’t find shouting entertaining), or even the fact that it all takes place in one room (the green upholstery of the Commons is a timeless design masterpiece). I think political disengagement stems from us, the public, feeling as though we don’t own politics. Politics is not a separate world to the one in which we live our daily lives and yet many feel it is. Many don’t realise that it us who make politics. We are the reason why Gordon Brown contorts his face into a smile despite obvious pain, why David Cameron shines his forehead to what seems the bone and why Nick Clegg has that haircut – and we shouldn’t forget it.
However, in order to regain control of politics and to make more of an impact on it than what make-up artists the politicians use, we have to act directly – we have to vote. Whether you think that all candidates are the same or that voting is already a foregone conclusion, you mustn’t forget that when you vote you make politicians accountable to you and when you don’t vote you give them free reign. The next General Election has to take place before the 3rd June 2010 and if you don’t want politics to be ‘old men shouting at each other in a room’ then I would urge those of you who are able to vote, to vote.
Remember, not everyone can be a poet but we can all write prose.

Year 12 Geography visit – Juniper Hall 2010
Categories: School News

We arrived at Juniper Hall in Dorking not really knowing what to expect. After eating lunch in the sunshine and playing a big group game of frisbee (a game enjoyed at many spare occasions throughout the stay) we settled into our rooms. Next we met our teacher for the week, Jason, and got straight to work.
For the next three days we completed a range of activities which involved going out every day on a field trip. We went to Mickleham, Leigh, Guilford and we also visited 5 different sites on the River Tillingbourne. This was everyone’s favourite day because we had to get in the river and measure its characteristics. We all looked amazing in our multi-coloured waterproof clothing, wellies and marigolds!
When we got back from the fieldwork sites there was lots work to do analysing and presenting our data. Most nights we were still working at 8.30. Jason even brought in his small black Labrador puppy to entertain us. Despite being tired most evenings we enjoyed staying up and chatting.
On the train ride home many in the class noted how the trip helped us get to know each other better and that we had become closer as a group. I am sure Mr Chapman and Ms Mellor will also be pleased to hear that we also felt well prepared for our skills exam in May.

Visit to Berlin, 10-13 March 2010
Categories: School News

I can’t say that I held my expectations high. But what I didn’t expect was to encounter one of my best lifetime experiences so far.
50 students from year 10 and 11 met at 4am on the Wednesday to make the trip from England to Germany. We flew to Germany by plane and as soon as we left the terminal a coach was present to take us to our first destination.
The Olympic stadium was our first stop, home to the 2006 World Cup but originally used for the 1936 Summer Olympics and a site filled with history.
Then to the Reichstag, that houses the parliament (Bundestag) of Germany. It was filled with history, mystery and great architecture (the architect of the dome of the building, Norman Foster, also co-designed the London Gherkin). For all those Call of Duty lovers, the Reichstag and Berlin are a large part of the COD World at war plot. We learned about the events that are shown in the game and we even visited the Reichstag at night later on in the visit.
I would have to say the Concentration camp (Sachsenhausen) was personally the best part of the trip for me, as it was so thought provoking. The deepness of the things we learned when we went there cannot be expressed on one page. My encounter has led me to look at all life in a new light, and at the end of the day Dunraven left a wreath with a message for all future visitors to see.
The next day we visited Bebelplatz, outside Humboldt University, where the Nazi book burnings took place. Empty bookshelves can be seen underground to symbolise the books that were taken from the university and destroyed.
Nearby is a plaque bearing the poet Heinrich Heine’s words: “where books are burned, in the end people will burn.”
By the end of the trip we had also visited the Jewish museum of Berlin, the Allies museum, the Holocaust memorial and the Stasi prison. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and I would certainly go on this life-changing trip again.

Urchins at the Opera
Categories: School News
On Saturday 27th March, Year 7 and 8 Dunraven students took part in a performance of Puccini's opera Tosca at All Saints Church in West Dulwich.
The students formed the street urchins' chorus and alongside students from Bishop Thomas Grant performed with the Midsummer Opera Group, professional soloists and the well respected Lambeth Orchestra conducted by Christopher Fifield, formerly of Glyndebourne Opera.
The opera sold out and was extremely well received. Well done to all of the students involved. It really was a tremendous achivement and Dunraven was very proud to be involved.
Lambeth Orchestra, conducted by Christopher Fifield, performs regularly at All Saints Church, Rosendale Road. The next concert in on May 22nd and the programme includes Beethoven's 2nd Symphony, Brahms's Serenade and Richard Strauss's Oboe Concerto. For more details go to www.lambethorchestra-org.uk

Another good week for Dunraven sport
Categories: School News
Dunraven has had another successful sporting week, We competed in a number of different sports and gained victories over Archbishop Tenison's and Kingsdale. Whilst the rest of the school were watching 'Dunraven's Got Talent' the Year 7 basketball team were playing Archbishop Tenison's. The game was a close affair with Dunraven running out winners by 26 points to 25. The year 9 basketball team travelled to London Nautical and played extremely well although losing by 4 points. The girls had a busy netball week which started poorly with two losses to BTG but finished on a high as the Year 8-9's beat Kingsdale 12-0 while the Year 10-11s won 11-0. The week finished with a bang as our first ever girls' rugby league team travelled to St Joseph's for an inter-school competition. They played schools with a lot more experience and lost both games but impressed along the way and are looking forward to next years competition already.
Well done to all students that took part and who continue to put the time in at the after school clubs.

Year 12 Business Studies students recently visited the City as part of their Level 3 BTEC course. They attended a Workshop at UBS, one of the largest investment banks in the world.
The students took part in a graduate training excercise which involved deciding on the essential staff in a business organisation. They were broken up into teams and each team had a spokesperson who fed back to all present - quite an achievement as there were staff from UBS and other organisations present. UBS personnel explained how they got to their positions and gave excellent advice for those wishing to follow a career in business - particularly in London.
The students then enjoyed a second graduate training exercise which involved share trading. All teams made a profit but the winning team turned £20,000 into £56,003 - well done to Gordon Voogt, Juan Ayala Cuenca and John Lovesey. We know who to go to in the future...

Under 12 and 13 Rugby League success.
Categories: School News
.jpg)
Dunraven's year 7 and 8 Rugby League team travelled to Rosendale playing fields in good spirits with recent success. They were taking part in an invitation tournament for the three strongest rugby schools in Lambeth. The opposition for the day was London Nautical School and Archbishop Tenison's.
Both schools played a very good standard of rugby with Nautical passing through hands very well and Tenison's running with pace and power. Dunraven got off to a slow start but after a number of big matches both teams made it through to the finals.
The year 7s played Nautical who they had drawn with twice. The year 7s continued to show their potential with further improvement and secured a well earned victory with 4 tries to 1. Special mention for Luke, Ibrahim and Daniel who played very well.
The year 8s were missing a number of key players as well as having to contend with a number of injuries due to the big tackles coming in from the opposition. In the end they lost the final to Tenison's (even though they had beat them earlier in the competition). Well done to both teams and lets hope that they continue this form into the BRIXTON BULLS season.

Lambeth Youth Mayor

With 10,000 votes cast, this year's youth elections were the closest ever. This meant a re-count of all votes took place a few hours before Lambeth's Chief Executive and returning officer, Derrick Anderson, declared the winners. Over 1000 votes were cast at Dunraven School. School candidates Abisola Ogundare and Donata Milller narrowly missed out on the positions which they ran for, but both fought outstanding campaigns.

On the guest list were stick insects, giant millipedes, cockroaches, scorpions and a tarantula named Lucy.
Everyone was given the opportunity to stroke the tarantula and scorpion - a few lucky students sat with a stick insect perched on their shoulder for the duration of the show.

Excellent week for Dunraven's sports team
Categories: School News
Dunraven had an excellent week with 6 victories across 4 different sports. The week started with a bang as Dunraven played a Year 7 and a Year 10 fixture v St Thomas Apostle. The Year 10s continued to impress and secured a narrow victory with a 1-0 win, thanks to a goal from Ackeem (10RB). The Year 7s were playing only their second game after a very frustrating series of cancelled games. They looked rusty from the off but fought hard, losing 6-1. However the Dunraven Year 7s had a chance later in the week to put that result behind them and completed a fantastic 3-2 win over Norwood School with Luke (7TF) scoring the winning goal.
The Dunraven netball team completed a Year 9 and 10 whitewash over St Martins and Lambeth Academy on Tuesday and continue to do well in the Lambeth league. On Wednesday a number of Dunraven Year 11s played in a sixth form Rugby tournament. They battled well, beating Archbishop Tenison, losing closely to Riddlesdown, and impressed against bigger and stronger opposition. The final game of the week was the senior basketball team playing Lambeth Academy. This was a close affair and Miquel (11TC) has written a review below,
"Taking the early lead Dunraven seemed the favourites to win. As the game proceeded other factors came into play as Lambeth Academy's fitness was to a very high level. With both teams scoring, neither team was able to take a commanding lead and players struggled to find their shooting rhythm. However Dunraven continued to dominate the defensive and offensive boards and took advantage of Lambeth's missed opportunities. Eventually Dunraven took the lead, holding it till the final buzzer. "

Mr Boyle received this letter from Joanne Hatfield of the Lambeth Children's Service:
I would like to thank you and Joel from your school who played an active role in this process.
The day was an overwhelming success and the young people’s panel made a significant contribution to the day.
We received such positive feedback on how well the young people came together as a group and in expressing their views in terms of questions they wanted to ask the candidates. They also provided excellent feedback regarding the performance of each of the candidates on which they were all agreed.
It was a real pleasure having such an enthusiastic and energetic group of young people contributing to this process.
Once again please accept my thanks and pass this on to Joel on behalf of the Authority.

Dunraven boys do Brixton Bulls proud
Categories: School News

Dunraven has long been known as a hotbed of Rugby League within South London. Nothing changed this weekend as a number of boys represented Brixton Bulls. There were due to be two games but the under 13s had theirs cancelled only hours before kick off. So this left the under 16s containing no less than 11 Dunraven players. Brixton were playing against an impressive Croydon Hurricanes side who has a number of excellent players. The game came down to the last kick and Tim stuck it between the posts to secure a last second draw. Well done to Corbyn (11KS), Lewis (11KS), Drillion (11RB), Noah (10JP), Jack (10JP), James (11RB), Tim (10JP), Tegan (11VS), Miquel (11TC), Josh (11OF) and Mitchell (10JG).
Dunraven Netball girls too strong for Harris East Dulwich
Categories: School News

The Dunraven girls’ netball team defeated Harris Academy East Dulwich, 17-0, in a home game on Wednesday. Dunraven utilized their speed and excellent passing to dominate the match. Harris Academy put up a strong resistance whilst also demonstrating impressive sportsmanship in defeat.
Dunraven got off to a good start with the Centre (Leah) and the Wing Attack (Aba) providing brilliant passing, setting up the Goal Attack (Cami) and Goal Shooter (Elizabeth) to score 10 goals between them at half time. The second half was dominated by outstanding defence from Dunraven, shutting out their opponents throughout the entire match- limiting them to only 2 attempts at goal. There were some key interceptions by the Wing Defence (Eniola) and the Goal Keeper (Amy) along with the Goal Defence (La’Tanya) who with their speed were able to block passing lanes and force footwork fouls. A substitution brought on a new Goal Defence (Shaquelle) who made some incisive passing, aiding the scoring of 7 more goals to finish the game.
Police visit
Categories: School News
On 25 February 8ZG were given the great opportunity to have PC Wells come into our geography lesson and be asked some prepared questions by the class. The questions were related to the topic crime we were studying and included: Why did you want to become a police officer? What crime occurs the most in Lambeth? And what is the most serious crime you have witnessed or solved?
PC Wells gave very interesting and detailed answers. It was intriguing to hear a different perspective on crime, to see it through the eyes of the police rather than a citizen. It is very fortune that 8ZG happens to be taking their Geography assessment next week about knife crime, so the students were able to ask plenty of questions on how the police is trying to solve this crime.
It seemed everyone in the class enjoyed the interview and gained a lot from the experience.

Horrible science
Categories: School News

Two year 7 classes visited the Wimbledon Theatre on March 3 and 4 to watch the live stage show of Horrible Science as part of the many events being organised by the science dept for National Science and Engineering Week. The highlight of the show was the 3D Bogglevision sites which involved students wearing 3D glasses as they were taken on a journey to the world of microbes in the bathroom, gravity and space and the anatomy of the human gut!
As the promoters said: "What are millions of animals doing in your kettle? Why don’t penguins get spots? Why do rabbits eat the same food twice? Why doesn’t the moon wander off? Could a 10 million volt battery float over your head? And how long would it take for your heart to pump enough blood to fill the theatre?" Year 7 students now know the answers.
IT diploma students at IBM
Categories: School News

Year 10 IT Diploma students spent a day at IBM South Bank, London on 23 February. Several IBM employees including programmers and business analysts gave up their working day to spend the time working as buddies with our students.
The task of the day was to set up a congestion charge system (modelled on the London Congestion Charge Scheme) for the fictional town of Springfield.
Students held conference calls with the Springfield town representatives to find out the requirements of the system. A business model using IBM Blueworks software was created after it was approved by the clients.
The hard work of programming began! Once the system was set up, students moved on to testing the Springfield congestion charge system. It was a proud moment when charges were being applied to the cars going into the congestion charge area on the Springfield town model!
After lunch, our students presented their final solution to their clients discussing the impact of implementing such a system. Clients were suitably impressed. Prizes were given to the group with the best presentation. Our students did really well and came away feeling inspired about taking on the world of IT in the future.
West Side Story a sell-out success!!
Categories: School News

On 10th and 11th February Dunraven staff and students from all year groups were involved in the fantastic production of West Side Story. Bringing together talented actors, singers, dancers, musicians and technical crew the show showed Dunraven students' many talents.
Telling the tragic love story of Maria (Ellie) and Tony (Eben), the show is set in New York City in the 1950s. Two teenage street gangs of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds clash before Tony, one of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo (Dorian), the leader of the Sharks, leading to their untimely deaths.
Bernstein’s magical but highly complex music was brought to life by an orchestra led by Ms Blackler. Ms. Edge even had to learn a new instrument, the piccolo, to make our version totally authentic. Our favourites included ‘Tonight’, ‘Somewhere’ and ‘I feel Pretty’.
The show was sold out at all performances and thrilled the audiences. Huge congratulations go to all involved for their hard work and dedication. A special thank-you to Ms Gooch (producer), Mrs Ormond & Ms Gaultier (directors), Ms Blackler (musical director), Ms Andrews (choreographer), Mr Jones (technical director), Ms K Smith (set designer) and band members Ms Edge, Ms Votano, Ms P Smith & Ms. Harington-Booth.

Lambeth Youth Elections
Categories: School News

Dunraven has two candidates running in the Lambeth youth elections this year. Abisola will be running for the position of Lambeth Youth Mayor and Donata will be running to be the Member of Youth Parliament for Lambeth. Both students are very passionate about their applications and will be visiting assemblies over the next two weeks to promote their views.
The election itself will be held on Thursday 24th February, polling stations will be located on both the upper school and lower school sites and student voting will follow the usual routine of students leaving lessons for 10 minutes to vote.
The election videos that candidates have filmed are available – along with their written manifestos – on the Youth Mayor website at www.youthmayor4lambeth.com. The following link will take you directly to the candidates’ pages: http://tinyurl.com/yfue77v.
Candidates' statements
Abisola (Lambeth Youth Mayor)
I’m 15 years old and I live in Clapham North / Brixton. I attend Dunraven School in Streatham. I am a Black British female and like meeting with new people. I have just started training to be a peer mediator and want to be a lawyer working with families and youth. I play football and am a member of the school council. I enjoy getting along with different people from different backgrounds and different ages.
I am running for youth mayor as I believe that I would make a change in Lambeth and bring in the views that us young people want to have in our community. I think I will be a good candidate as I could get views from different areas. I believe that everyone should be given a chance to achieve their best and become what they want to be. To be able to do this I would like to make more opportunities for young people.
I also believe that instead of just adding more youth clubs in Lambeth we should give more facilities to the youth clubs we already have, for example, football coaching and music workshops. I would also like to focus on schools, as this is vital for young people. Exclusions should be prevented as I know that some students struggle to find another school when they are excluded. I believe this can be helped by mentoring students that behave badly.
Vote for me as I can make these changes, not only by putting my ideas into action, but the ideas of other young people too.
Donata (Lambeth Youth Parliament)
I am running to be a member of youth parliament. I currently study and socialise in Lambeth and take history, sociology and art at school. I stand for equality, education and enjoyment.
Equality: as a member of youth parliament, I will personally strive to hear everyone’s views and ideas, whether small or great. Every person counts. Education: what works? What doesn’t? Everyone should have the opportunity to get as far at school as they can.
Education is a pipeline to greatness from which change can happen.
Enjoyment: there is more to life than just existing and as your MYP I will have a great amount of focus on life and improving opportunities in life. This will include places to meet people, take away tensions, open up to new ideas and enjoy yourself.
I hope to change life for young people in Lambeth by combining enjoyment, peace, learning and fun to make the future better. If I am elected to represent Lambeth’s young people, I will be more than a figurehead, an average leader, or a personality. We will be able to proudly say ‘Lambeth is what it is because of everyone’.

Categories: School News
This is our final filming lesson; we have successfully completed all our filming. It has been a great experience and we hope to do something like this again.
By Samira, Humairaa, Kate, Alessia, Jyrell and Fawaaz
Monday 1st February 2010
We have now finished filming our school report introduction. We had several attempts filming certain shots but got there in the end. We have also started filming some of our voxpops and that went very well.
Monday 25th January 2010
We have already started filming by interviewing Mr Day, a sports teacher, the main topic being the impact of the London 2012 Olympics. He provided excellent answers and opinions for our chosen questions.
We have also interviewed Taj, a pupil of Dunraven, who is a very successful athlete and he hopes to take a career in the sporting world. We have learnt how to use a camera and also important interviewing skills that may help us in the future. Interviewing other people has given us practice when we are asking or answering questions without just answering with ‘yes’ or ‘no’. We really enjoyed having used professional equipment.
General thoughts by the team:
I think that the BBC School Report will really benefit us by helping us learn media skills and boost our confidence.
So far my group have progressed quite a lot from when we began at the beginning of term. We chose a general topic we would investigate for the project, then we put ideas that linked to it and then chose a specific story.
When we finished that we gave each person a role in the production. I was the presenter, alongside Lianne. We interviewed Mr Boyle and filmed an introduction in the beginning. Chima was the sound man and so was Michael. Simona was the camera (wo)man. We have all enjoyed this project and I hope I get another experience like this.
By Moses, Michael, Chima, Lianne, Leo and Simona
During this project we have been researching dogs and why they are, or can be, dangerous.
For the first step in this project, we read the newspapers to look at the latest headlines and we saw that there were different types of stories, including sport, dangerous dogs, and the credit crunch.
We thought that dogs stood out the most because over the past years dogs have been killing young and old people, and another dog has recently killed a young girl. They have been used as vicious weapons and used to fight other dogs and people in previous years.
After we found all the information about dogs and why they are/can be dangerous, we drew out a storyboard of what we’re going to do, how the intro will begin, what pictures will come onto the screen, and what we will talk about during the filming.
We organised a phone interview with Battersea Dogs Home, and have filmed some voxpops to collect the opinions of the general public.

Boy meets girl...
Categories: School News

Boy meets girl, ethnic and culture clash, street gangs, love, tragedy - the musical West Side Story brings Romeo and Juliet into a modern urban setting. Many of its songs are well-known, especially "Maria", "I want to be in America", "Somewhere", "Tonight" and "I Feel Pretty". You may have seen musical productions at Dunraven, Oh What a Lovely War and, more recently, Oliver!, but West Side Story is the big one - a very ambitious project for a school - and bringing together all the performing arts departments in one massive project.
This performance does not just happen. Students and staff have been rehearsing tirelessly, every weeknight and every weekend since last term. And there are just two performances, on Wednesday 10 February and Thursday 11 February, at 7pm . Tickets £5, concessions £2, family ticket £10, are available from the school offices.
This is a production not to be missed.

Many interviews have been carried out and we’re not finished yet! Global warming isn’t the only topic we’re doing. We’re covering everything from dog fighting to the recession. Everything has got be finished for our deadline in March. BBC report is lots of fun but hard work! We will keep you updated with all of our pictures as our report begins to come together.
Sixth form visit Houses of Parliament
Categories: School News

On an icy Monday morning a group of politics students set out to participate in a tour of the Houses of Parliament. At Portcullis House; adjacent to the Parliament, we were met with an equally cold greeting; security reminiscent of an airport, but much more claustrophobic. Once our clothing and bags were checked and our photos were taken (for entry passes) we were led to a waiting area, where we were visibly separated from those at work until called upon. Portcullis House was connected to Parliament via an underground tunnel, and although Parliament is centuries older the two appear to connect seamlessly.
As we were taken through the halls of the Houses we were taught a brief history of politics in Britain, which is displayed all along the walls. The old and the new were blended together on the walls; 17th century paintings, post-WW2 restorations and a copy of the Magna Carta. When we stood in the central lobby we were surprised to be inside somewhere you see so much on the news, and that feeling was repeated throughout the trip. Unlike many other attractions often seen on television, the grandeur of the Central Lobby is just as astounding in real life. As with the rest of the House the old is intertwined with the new; pictures and stained glass of monarchs and saints mixed with statues of Prime Ministers.

Sixth formers question Ed Miliband on climate change
Categories: School News

The United Nations Climate Change Conference, in which 192 countries will take part in, has been described as the most important summit in the post-war world and Labour has seen it as not only a chance to bring about ambitious change but to empower people to bring about environmental change. So, a Question & Answer session was arranged with the goal of giving the people of Lambeth the opportunity to express their hopes for Copenhagen and ask their questions on the government’s climate change policies. The Dunraven Sixth Form Politics students were given the opportunity to attend this unique forum at Brixton Town Hall with the Secretary for Climate Change, Ed Miliband; the Senior Climate Advisor to Greenpeace, Charlie Kronick; and Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Streatham, Chuka Umunna.

The story so far...
Categories: School News

8ZG have started work in earnest on their news stories for the School Report Day on 11 March.
The students have split into five different groups, with each group putting together a different story. Topics range from dangerous dogs to global warming. Every week, we are lucky enough to have a professional film maker come into school and work with us, and we have also received support from a BBC news journalist.
Filming has already started, and students have interviewed Mr Day about the impact of Olympics 2012; Mr Schmauss has spoken about climate change and the work being done by the school's Eco Ravens; and Mr Boyle was asked about how the recession has affected funding. Our professional film maker was very impressed with the students' ability to plan, prepare and successfully conduct their interviews.
Next week, Ms Lowe and Mr Abdullah will be interviewed about bullying and we're hoping to collect some voxpop footage by going out and about on the streets of Streatham.
This page will be updated on a weekly basis, so keep checking for further progress reports, student blogs and photos.

This house would assassinate dictators
Categories: School News

Dunraven School hosted the first round of the English-speaking Union's Sixth Form Mace debate on Wednesday 9 December. Six schools from South London competed in this heat. The Dunraven team proposed the motion: "This House would assassinate Dictators".
It was a great evening and our sixth form team won. Samir, Year 13, was wonderful as ever, and Grace in year 12, who stepped in at the last minute, did a very fine job. Dunraven is now through to the regional finals which will take place early next year.
Tender workshops
Categories: School News

Sam and Felix, in the Year 10 drama group, write:
At the start of term the year 10 drama class entered E1 on a Friday afternoon to be greeted by two new faces, Daniel and Roisin. We were told that for the next six weeks our double period would be taken by two people from the domestic violence charity Tender who would be holding weekly workshops teaching us about different stages of an abusive relationship. At first it was safe to say that none of us knew much about abusive relationships and how serious an issue it was.

Lest we forget
Categories: School News

At eleven o'clock on Wednesday 11 November, as happens every year, the school observed the two minute silence for Armistice Day. Outside at the end of break as the whistle blew, all students stopped moving and a hush fell upon the site. Seconds later we heard the canons at Westminster, six miles away. Earlier, all tutors had read this text to their students:
"Today is Armistice day, the day of peace the the end of the FIrst World War. At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month you are asked to join the rest of the country and people overseas in the two-minute silence.
"We will be remembering the millions of people who have given their lives in war so that others may live in freedom.
"Among those who died we will be remembering in our thoughts all the families in the United Kingdom, Ireland and many other countries, from the Caribbean, Africa, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, the Americas, other Commonwealth and European countries, in the Middle East and across the world who lost relatives, neighbours and friends in the struggle for freedom.
"We remember so that it shall never happen again."
Prizegiving

Despite the fact it was November the 5th, Prize Presentation turned out to be an uplifting evening which was nevertheless well attended. Families and friends gathered to see students receive prizes for attainment and effort in a range of subjects and areas.
The guests and students were treated to some wonderful music performed by the students - some of whom were prize winners.
Our guest speaker for the evening was Damon Buffini, a highly successful businessman, who gave an inspirational speech which encouraged the students to continue to work hard and to strive to reach the highest levels. Well done to all of the prize winners- and thank you to the families and staff who have and continue to support them on their journey to success.
