Retail Business
“The successful company is no longer one that just makes money; a financial return is a necessary condition, but it is not sufficient.”
André Hoffmann
Our department's aim is to develop young entrepreneurs that are able to evaluate market opportunities and create goods that meet the needs of societies and communities as a whole. Therefore, social, moral and environmental factors must be an integral part of the course.
KS4
At the beginning of year 10 we explore the purpose and nature of businesses and the objective of firms. The fact that profits is not the main objective is evaluated as well as the importance of social and ethical factors. Technological changes, such as the development of e-commerce, have transformed the way that business operates and therefore it is an important area to study. We then explore globalisation and the ever changing business environment. A great emphasis is placed on the four main aspects of Business: marketing, operations, finance and human resources. In order to develop successful learners, we explore the link between academic studies and the real business environment.
We believe that students must develop in a holistic way ensuring that students are able to progress into A Level, employment or any other alternative path. As part of our teaching and learning strategy, we endeavour to teach our students transferable skills which will help them in all aspects of their academic studies as well as in future employment.
KS5
At the beginning of the course, students look at the skills and expertise of successful entrepreneurs in competitive and challenging business environments. Creativity, perseverance and a capacity to motivate others are areas that we explore in detail. For example, financial rewards as a form of motivation has its limitations. Employees in a modern working environment are looking for more than just money. The powerful eruption of e-commerce is something that must be addressed in any business course and we look at how firms can increase and improve their distribution channels by having an online presence. The financial aspect of firms is also crucial; therefore, we place significance on the development of the numerical skills of our students. In the second year, we evaluate strategies and challenges when firms consider implementing changes, international expansion or introducing new methods of production. Students are required to gain the skills to assess the difficulties and challenges facing firms and offer solutions with a theoretical business understanding.
Again, our motto is to help our students to develop the skills which will be invaluable to them on their journey to academic success and in their future careers- students who are able to adapt, compete and fulfil their expectations in a dynamic and unpredictable environment.
