ICT & Computing
Digital technology is driving extraordinary global changes and computing is a dynamic and rapidly growing area that has become an integral part of our lives
Students will be able to navigate and respond to these changes effectively and safely through the curriculum
Our Computing provision aims to develop students' skills, knowledge and understanding in Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy
Students will develop problem solving skills using computational thinking and creativity to solve problems
Computing encourages collaboration, teamwork, project and time management through the completion of various projects
Students examine and analyse their role as a digital citizen, the ethical, social, cultural and environmental impacts of emerging technologies
KS3
The KS3 curriculum covers a range of topics that enable students to learn about the three main strands in Computing - Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy. Students will:
-
Understand file management, computer safety and digital communication
-
Digital design - understand how to create a product that is fit for purpose and meets target audience needs
-
Image manipulation and animation using specialist software Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Animate
-
Computer Science - introduced to coding via block based and text based languages
-
Digital citizen -under the legislation around computing and consciousness around our digital footprint
KS4
The GCSE Computer Science course builds upon the learning and knowledge developed at KS3. Students will be able to combine their skills and knowledge from prior learning to:
-
Understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of Computer Science, including abstraction, decomposition, logic, algorithms, and data representation
-
Analyse problems in computational terms through practical experience of solving such problems, including designing, writing and debugging programs
-
Think creatively, innovatively, analytically, logically and critically
-
Understand the components that make up digital systems, and how they communicate with one another and with other systems
-
Understand the impacts of digital technology to the individual and to wider society
-
Apply mathematical skills relevant to Computer Science
KS5
The A Level Computer Science course builds upon the learning and knowledge developed at KS4. Computer Science at KS5 offers more focus on the practical element of programming where students can apply the academic principles learned in the classroom to real world systems. It is a creative subject that enables students to combine problem solving, creative flair and design through the digital landscape. Students will develop:
-
An understanding and ability to apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including: abstraction, decomposition, logic, algorithms and data representation
-
The ability to analyse problems in computational terms through practical experience of solving such problems by creating programmed solutions
-
The capacity to think creatively, innovatively, analytically, logically and critically
-
The capacity to see relationships between different aspects of computer science
-
Mathematical skills
All of these are sought after skills by higher education institutions and employers and enable them to progress to the next steps
